McAvennie stunned as Walker names ‘soft’ Celtic player in Team of the Season
Frank McAvennie was shocked to see Andy Walker put a Celtic defender in his SPFL team of the season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops hitman was stunned by Kristoffer Ajer’s inclusion.
Walker was asked to name his team of the season by Sky Sports and he selected Ajer in the heart of the defence.
While justifying Ajer’s selection, Walker admitted “It has not been his best year” at Parkhead.
The defender may disagree with that statement as earlier this year he claimed, “it may have been my best season at the club.” [Daily Record]
McAvennie claims Ajer hasn’t done enough defensively this season but admitted he can be “wonderful” going forward.
“Yeah, I was surprised to see that. I’m thinking, really?” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Rangers have had such a good season defensively. I’ve said before about how well drilled they are.
“Ajer will tell anyone who listens that he’s had the best season of his life. I don’t agree.
“The boy is entitled to his opinion but I can’t agree. He’s a wonderful talent coming forward in the midfield.
“Call me old fashioned but I want my centre-halves to defend. He’s too soft. He’s not done it as a defender.”
Ajer made 46 appearances for Celtic this season, clocking up almost 4,000 minutes in green and white.
He had a productive post-split season as he picked up one goal and two assists.
In other news, McAvennie has tipped this ‘wonderful’ player to fill the Scott Brown void at Celtic.
