McAvennie tells Celtic star Benjamin Siegrist ‘leave now’ after source’s reveal
Benjamin Siegrist must quit Celtic as he lacks the needed mindset and “killer attitude” to challenge for the number one jersey.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie savaged the 31-year-old and claimed he must be underperforming in training.
As revealed by Football Insider (22 January), the Hoops are ready to accept an offer for Siegrist before the close of the transfer window with multiple European clubs weighing up moves.
He has made just two competitive appearances for Celtic since joining in the summer of 2022 from Dundee United and has found himself as third-choice behind Joe Hart and Scott Bain.
McAvennie admitted that he expected Siegrist to become Celtic’s top-choice goalkeeper when he joined, but has now urged him to seek a new club this month.
“I think he’s been there for a while, but we’ve hardly seen him play,” he told Football Insider.
“He’s been sitting on the bench and is always injured.
“I don’t get why they bought him.
“He came in from Dundee and I thought he was going to be the new number one, but he’s just not produced.
“He’s obviously not doing enough in training.
“He should have been in over Joe Hart, who should have had a rest by now.
“But Rodgers can’t rest him because he can’t bring Scott Bain in either.
“When you play at a big club like Celtic, you only get one chance to come in, maybe two.
“He’s not done it when he needs to and he needs a better mindset.

“I don’t see that in him, that killer attitude.
“There’s a few boys that have to leave now and Siegrist is one of them.”
