McAvennie thrilled by Reo Hatate latest as new Celtic footage emerges

Frank McAvennie has hailed Reo Hatate’s progress at Celtic this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said he would have loved to play alongside Hatate.

As shown on Sky Sports (13 November), the 24-year-old was integral to the Green and Whites’ equaliser against Ross County on Saturday (12 November).

The midfielder expertly holds onto the ball in the box and gets round three County players to set up David Turnbull.

The Celts went on to win the game 2-1 and head into the break nine points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

The Japan international was not included in Hajime Moriyasu’s 26-man World Cup squad, with Daizen Maeda the only Japanese member of the Celtic team to be called up.

McAvennie hailed Ange Postecoglou for picking out the centre-mid last year.

For me, the best of the lot is Hatate,” he told Football Insider.

I just think, as a striker, I would love to be on the pitch with him. He is pinging 60-yard passes and I am thinking wow. As a striker it would be great.

He is only going to get better. You do not get a lot of room in Scottish football. Now he has had a season to adjust.

After the World Cup he will get better and he is not even going. I can’t believe he was not picked. I am delighted because he will get a wee break but that must be one hell of a midfield Japan have got.

In other news, McManus has slammed VAR as Celtic footage analysed – ‘another dodgy decision’.
