McAvennie throws his weight behind Lampard & Morris taking over at Celtic
Frank McAvennie would like to see Frank Lampard take the reins at Celtic as it would bring “great free-flowing football” to the club.
The former Hoops striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims that Lampard and his number two Jody Morris make a good team and he would be keen to see them replace Neil Lennon.
Lampard was sacked by Chelsea in January after only 18 months as manager, leaving the club ninth in the Premier League.
With Lennon’s position as Celtic boss in serious doubt following a calamitous 2020/21 season, the Chelsea legend has been linked with the post.
McAvennie is open to Lampard taking over and explained that his appointment would please Hoops fans who want a big name to take the role.
McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “I wouldn’t be too disappointed with Frank Lampard, that’s for sure.
“Going back to the Championship with Derby, him and Jody Morris are a good partnership. I wouldn’t be too disappointed with them.
“The fans want a big name and he is a big name. I thought he did well at Chelsea.
“Especially in that first year, he did ever so well. They were playing great free-flowing football so if he was to come in I wouldn’t be disappointed.”
“The football they played, I would be quite happy to see that at Celtic.”
Lennon has survived numerous calls from Celtic fans demanding that the Hoops manager is sacked this season but whether he will remain at the club next year is unknown.
The Hoops currently sit second in the Scottish Premiership, 18 points behind Rangers with a game in hand.
