McAvennie tips 'lethal' Sakala to replace Rangers star after what he's seen

Frank McAvennie has been blown away by Fashion Sakala’s start to life at Rangers.

The former Celtic hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the striker is “a different breed”.

Sakala, 24, scored a hattrick for Rangers in last weekend’s 6-1 mauling of Motherwell.

Those were his second, third and fourth goals in the blue of Rangers since joining the club in the summer.

His other goal also came against Motherwell in September’s 1-1 draw at Ibrox.

McAvennie insists Sakala has given Steven Gerrard a different option in attack and backed him to take confidence form his recent performances.

“If you can’t get confidence after that, then nothing will do it,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I’ve said this before, you have to be a different breed to walk into a side like Rangers and score goals.

“You can’t have bad games, you just can’t. It’s been that way for years and years now.

“This boy has come in and gave Gerrard something different as a striker.

“It’s great for him, he looked delighted at the end of the game. Now he’s got to carry on doing it. That’s the next step if he wants to replace Morelos.

“Roofe and Morelos are there and that is some serious competition.

“But he’s done himself no harm by getting such a good hattrick, those finishes were lethal.”

Sakala started as Rangers drew 1-1 with Brondby in the Europa League on Thursday night.

He lasted 56 minutes but was hauled off after picking up a contentious yellow card in the first half.
