McAvennie tips Rangers to complete 'huge signing' despite 'terrible finances'

Rangers will struggle to appoint a new manager due to the state of their finances, according to Frank McAvennie.

The former Celtic hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the Gers should appoint a “wheeler and dealer”.

Rangers are looking for a new manager after Steven Gerrard left the club to join Aston Villa on Thursday.

This came as the Scottish champions posted a loss of £23.5million for the year ending June 2021, as per the 64-page annual report document published on 5 November.

McAvennie insists Rangers must appoint a manager with this in mind.

He also warned the club has to win the title this season or risk facing more financial woes.

“It all depends on who Rangers get in,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“This is a huge signing for them. They have to get it right.

“I’m not having a go at Rangers here, but their finances are in a terrible state.

“They needed that league win last season, they need it this season.

“Rangers need someone who can come in and stabilise the club again.

“Someone who won’t waste money, maybe a bit of a wheeler and dealer.

“I don’t think Rangers are in a position to offer any manager the world because of their finances.

“That will rule a lot of people out. I think they will appoint someone who has worked under those conditions before.”

The Gers are in action against Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup after the international break.

This means the Gers’ new boss could secure his side’s place in a major final in his first game.
