McGeady could face extended spell out after Sunderland update – Phillips

Kevin Phillips has insisted Aiden McGeady will struggle to get back into the Sunderland starting XI when he returns from injury.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend said “it’d be amazing” to have “one of the best players in the league” on the bench.

McGeady has been sidelined since the 1-1 draw at Shrewsbury Town in mid-November with a knee injury.

As quoted by the Chronicle (2 January), Lee Johnson revealed the winger is “four to six weeks” away from a return to first team action.

Johnson said the 92-times Ireland international is “still not comfortable” and “is not running yet”.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the news, Phillips said: “It’s just great that they still have these big players to come back.

“When it happens it will be a good dilemma for Lee to have. If Sunderland are still playing the way they are, McGeady and O’Nien will struggle to get into the starting XI.

“Imagine having two of the best players in the league sitting on the bench. It’d be amazing.

“Let’s hope that when the injured players come back it spurs the ones that are stating to perform even better.

“From Lee Johnson’s point of view, it is a great position to be in.”

McGeady has contributed three goals and four assists in 16 appearances this season.

His contract expires at the end of the season.
