McGregor could make ‘shock’ return v Rangers after news in last 24 hrs – McAvennie

Celtic star Callum McGregor could make a “shock” return from injury to face Rangers next month.

That’s according to former Hoops hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid the latest on the midfielder’s injury.

McGregor, 28, went off with a facial injury during Celtic’s 2-1 win over Alloa on Saturday (22 January).

He was on the sidelines as the Hoops beat Hearts 2-1 on Wednesday (26 January) though, according to the Scottish Sun, his face was swollen and bruised.

Despite this, McAvennie is holding out hope the injury isn’t as bad as first feared and McGregor can play some role in 2 February’s Old Firm.

“I’m hoping Callum’s injury isn’t as bad as people are saying,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I still don’t think we know how long he will be out for. He’s such a wonderful talent.

“If he’s out for a couple of weeks it’s a blow, we need him back for the Old Firm.

“If he’s out for just a week that might actually be good for him because the guy never rests.

“He’s barely missed a game for two years. All of this being said, Postecoglou has done this before.

“He’s always coy with the injuries and doesn’t give return dates, he’s doing the same with Kyogo at the moment. We don’t really know when he’s meant to be back.

“So let’s see. Maybe McGregor will be fit for the Old Firm and we are just keeping Rangers guessing.

“That would be great, it would give Rangers some shock, let me tell you.”

In December, Kyogo Furuhashi made a stunning return from injury in the League Cup final win over Hibs.

He scored both of his side’s goals after he was reported as a doubt in the weeks leading up to the game.
