McLeish: Celtic are replacing Rogic for 'a lot of money' after news today

Alex McLeish has suggested MK Dons star Matt O’Riley could prove to be a long-term replacement for Tom Rogic at Celtic.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 21-year-old could also cover for Parkhead “sensation” David Turnbull.

A recruitment source told Football Insider today (19 January) Celtic have triggered O’Riley’s £1.5million release and are now in talks over personal terms.

The 21-year-old goal-scoring midfielder was also wanted Swansea City and Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.

McLeish suggested O’Riley could immediately take the injured Turnbull’s place in the squad.

However, he suggested the English midfielder may be an upgrade on Rogic in the long run.

“If he’s better than what they have, it’s a no-brainer,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“Okay, there are players who are out injured like Turnbull. He’s been pretty much a sensation for Celtic since he’s come in.

“Rogic is kind of on the other side of the peak. He is still a great player, he’s come back and played very well for Postecoglou.

“You think that connection between manager and player has brought some more life into Tom’s football.

“I do believe if they go for someone, it has to be someone who’s better than Tom.

“At £1.5million, let’s face it, it’s still a lot of money for a Scottish club.”

O’Riley has scored seven goals and contributed five assists in 26 League One appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Rogic has netted three times and chipped in with six assists in the Scottish Premiership.
