McLeish claims Leeds 'can be one of the giants' after 'massive' update via Sky
Alex McLeish has claimed Leeds United could be “one of the giants” after plans to expand Elland Road were revealed.
The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Whites had prioritised commercial and financial growth.
As relayed by Sky Sports, Leeds have shelved plans to build a new training ground in order to expand Elland Road’s capacity to 55,000.
The Whites had previously planned to grow the stadium from 39,000 to 50,000 seats but have revised their proposal.
The club also plotted to build a £25million training facility in the shadow of their home ground.
However, they have chosen to relocate a community sports hub to that plot in order to allow for the expansion of the stadium.

McLeish heralded the ambition of the board and insisted finances played a “massive factor” in their decision making.
Asked if commercial growth was the priority for Leeds, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yes. I believe that that is a big factor.
“When you think of the breakaway 10 or 12 (founding clubs of the European Super League), what was the reason for that? It’s obviously to make sure that you are financially sufficient. So that’s a big factor, a massive factor.
“Leeds are a massive club. For them to come back after all these years and the way Bielsa has done it, the style of play superb, then it’s no surprise me to see Leeds expanding.
“They have ambitious owners and obviously there’s the call for size of stadium from the fans. Leeds can be proud of that fact, they can be one of the giants.”
Leeds fans will be hoping to be in attendance for the first home game of the season against Everton in August.
The Whites kick off the upcoming campaign with a trip to Manchester United.
