McLeish delivers some home truths to Goldson after Rangers talks twist

Alex McLeish has insisted Connor Goldson must “forget all the newspaper talk” surrounding his contract situation at Rangers.

The former Gers manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, implored the 28-year-old to keep up the performances that have made him a mainstay in Steven Gerrard’s squad.

Speaking to BT Sport last week, Goldson insisted he wants to stay with Rangers, but maintained he wants to see the club go to “the next level”.

Rangers

The Ibrox club won their 55th league title last season, but the English defender insists he wants the club to “win number 56, 57, and 58”.

Goldson’s current terms expire at the end of the season, meaning he could sign a pre-contract deal with a foreign club next year.

McLeish claimed the defender and club’s main focus has to be on retaining the Scottish Premiership title.

“Winning the league in consecutive seasons is always something very hard to do,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“We saw Celtic do it with Brendan Rodgers and a special group of players.

“What is the next level for Rangers? Winning a European trophy? I’m not so sure.

“Certainly, retaining the league has to be both in Connor’s and the club’s mind. They have to forget all the newspaper talk, even if he hasn’t signed a contract yet.

“He has to show that the playing side of his game can outshine the newspaper talk about his contract.

“He’s got to be helping Rangers maintain that consistency by playing at a level we’ve seen him capable of over these past few years.”

Rangers

Rangers have a lead of just two points at the summit of the Scottish Premiership.

They have dropped four points in the last five games.

In other news, Rangers have been tipped to strike a deal that will damage Celtic.
