McLeish hails 'cracking piece of business' at West Ham amid Soucek development

Tomas Soucek has been a “cracking piece of business” and deserves a new West Ham contract, according to Alex McLeish.

The former Premier League boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 26-year-old has been a “phenomenon” for the Hammers.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Irons plan to reward Soucek’s impressive form with a new and improved contract.

The Czech Republic international has netted eight goals in 27 appearances so far the help the Hammers sit fifth in the league table.

Initially signed on loan from Slavia Prague in January 2020, Soucek has missed just one of a possible 41 league games since his debut.

West Ham also signed former Slavia teammate Vladimir Coufal last summer.

McLeish lauded the pair as proof of the Czech Republic’s recent rise and insisted Soucek was well deserving of a new deal.

McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Soucek, he’s been a phenomenon. I’ve said many times, I think there’s a resurgence in Czech Republic football.

“There’s a cycle of players coming to the fore of in terms of their ability. The national team would justify that as well. They’re in the Euros, not least playing Scotland in one of the games.

“We certainly have seen two cracking pieces of business at West Ham.”

Soucek has a total of 43 games under his belt for the Hammers so far.

Coufal meanwhile has played 25 times since his move last summer.
