McLeish hails 'incredible' Celtic deal for Benjamin Siegrist

Benjamin Siegrist is facing a different kind of pressure after signing for Celtic.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Hoops’ latest signing.

On Tuesday (21 June) Celtic announced the signing of Siegrist, 30, on a four-year deal.

He arrived on a free transfer following the expiration of his deal with Dundee United and he will provide backup to Joe Hart next season.

The stopper made 41 appearances for Dundee United during the 2021-22 season and kept 14 clean sheets.

McLeish insists the move is “incredible” for Siegrist and admitted he had been left impressed after watching him last season.

“It’s an incredible move for the guy, to go to one of the Old Firm teams,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“There is a different type of pressure now. I know Joe Hart is number one now and he had a magnificent season.

“That’s what Siegrist has to follow. Watching him with United, in many of the games last season, he certainly looked like a very capable goalkeeper.

“Clawing at things sometimes when you think he was beaten. I’ve been very impressed by him.”

Hart made 54 appearances for the Hoops during the 2021-22 campaign.

He signed from Tottenham in the summer of 2021 after struggling to hold down a starting position at Burnley and West Ham in recent years.
