McLeish: Ings is such a ‘great signing for Aston Villa’ after what I’ve seen

Danny Ings has already proven himself a “great signing” for Aston Villa, according to Alex McLeish.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa boss raved over the 29-year-old’s “top-class” performances for both the Villans and former club Southampton.

Ings has scored two goals in as many games for Villa, including a spectacular overhead kick in the 2-0 win over Newcastle United.

He has a total of 57 goals in 142 Premier League appearances under his belt.

McLeish claimed Ings’ presence had brought a different dimension to the Villans up front.

He insisted Dean Smith now had a “polished diamond” to call upon in attack.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “A top-class striker. A guy who is very experienced in the Premier League, he has such great technique.

“He’s quick, he’s competitive, he has almost everything you need from a striker.

“When you buy players like that, you know you’re bringing the right stock into the squad and, very likely, into the starting XI most weeks.

“Ings is just a master in the penalty box. He brings a lot to the team in the build-up as well. He’s got a bit of pace, he’s got the technique, he can hold the ball up.

“It’s a great signing. I remember when we made we made signings during my career and thinking: ‘Phwoar, I’ve got diamond here.’

“He’s already a polished diamond, he’s not a rough diamond. It’s a great signing for Aston Villa.”

Ings has led the line in the absence of Ollie Watkins.

The 25-year-old has missed the opening two games with a knee injury.
