McLeish issues 'big' Celtic-Rangers title claim after confirmed Parkhead transfer reveal

Alex McLeish has insisted Celtic have a “big opportunity” to leapfrog Rangers in the Premiership title race.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Hoops have “crept back into contention” following the exit of Steven Gerrard earlier this month.

As quoted by the Daily Record last Wednesday (November 17), Celtic chairman Ian Bankier told the club’s annual general meeting that Ange Postecoglou will be backed in January as they continue their rebuild.

The Bhoys trail Rangers by just four points as the Ibrox club head into their first league match after the departure of Gerrard.

Celtic have also reached the League Cup final, with Rangers knocked out by Hibernian.

McLeish suggested the Hoops are right back in the mix for the league title.

“They will definitely see a big opportunity now compared to where they were at the start of the season,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“They’ve crept back into contention and are definitely playing with a lot more consistency.

“All of a sudden there’s been that transition at Rangers, and Celtic have got that wee bit of momentum.

“I’m sure they must feel now that they are right back into the mix and able to challenge Rangers. Before it didn’t look like they were going to be able to for one or two years.”

“It’s looking very interesting now.”

Celtic face Aberdeen on Sunday as they bid to close the gap to Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

The Hoops have won four of their last five league matches.
