McLeish: Leeds have an ‘outrageous’ talent on their hands who reminds me of Romario
Alex McLeish claims Patrick Bamford could be picked in the Premier League team of the season after his ‘supreme’ performances for Leeds United.
The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, also compared Bamford to Barcelona legend Romario.
Bamford, 27, has scored 14 Premier League goals this season while also registering seven assists.
There were doubts over Bamford’s ability to score goals in the Premier League after Leeds got promoted as he only had one top flight goal to his name before this season.
McLeish hailed Bamford as the ‘supreme team player’ and claims his off the ball work is comparable to that of Romario’s as he was said to drop deep and defend even in training.
“What a player, what a season he’s had as well,” McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“He could be in the Premier League team of the year with his performances. He’s the supreme team player.
“I remember when Romario went to Barcelona and the manager stopped training one day because he was tracking back.
“He said, ‘I signed you to score goals, stay up the park’, Bamford is like that, the complete package.
“His goalscoring is outrageous for just a lone man. They’ve been getting good support to him, in the last few games I’ve watched they’ve given him so much support.”
Bamford has gone five games without a goal and has failed to have a shot on target in Leeds’ last two games. [Wyscout]
Leeds are next in action against Tottenham on Saturday as they look to avenge January’s 3-0 loss in north London.
In other news, Robin Koch has been tipped for another lengthy spell on the sidelines at Leeds United.
