McLeish makes ‘incredible’ Rangers claim as last-gasp exit touted

Alex McLeish has suggested Steven Gerrard may let a midfielder leave Rangers before the end of the transfer window.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the “incredible” squad depth meant it would be impossible to keep everyone happy at Ibrox.

The signing of Juninho Bacuna means Gerrard has no fewer than nine recognised midfielders at his disposal.

Steven Davis, Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield and John Lundstram are the more senior options at Ibrox.

Gerrard also has youngsters Stephen Kelly and Nnamdi Ofoborh to call upon when fit and available.

McLeish admitted it would be impossible to keep every player satisfied with their game time this season.

As such, he suggested there could be an exit on the cards at Ibrox.

Asked how Gerrard could keep nine midfielders happy, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You can’t.

There are going to be lads who will get little bits and pieces of games. Then there’ll be the nucleus who will get more game time.

Generally, it’s the more experienced guys or if you’ve got a sensational new kid on the block you just can’t keep out the team.

“You would like to see that from young Kelly in the same way (Nathan) Patterson’s emerged. Even then, Patterson’s emerged and he can’t get a game.

“That’s what happens when you have such depth in your squad. You can’t play them all.

“Are Rangers lining up somebody to leave? They have got an incredible pool of players.”
