Leeds United need to “hurry up” and get Patrick Bamford tied down to a new contract, according to Alex McLeish.
The former Premier League manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 27-year-old had rewarded the Whites’ faith with his “sensational” performances.
Football Insider revealed back in February Leeds were set to open talks with Bamford over a new blockbuster deal.
The Telegraph claim the Whites will now push on to get the 27-year-old, as well as Kalvin Phillips, tied down with Premier League safety effectively secured.
However, it is said talks are still yet to start, with Bamford’s current terms set to expire next summer.
As such, McLeish insisted Leeds needed to get their skates on and tie their star man down.
“They better hurry up,” McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“A year’s not long, especially with this Covid thing, a year just goes by in a flash. Despite being locked up at home for most of the year, it still went very, very quickly.
“That contract will be up very, very soon. It’s a must for Leeds to sign Patrick. He’s been sensational. The four players behind him have tried to do their bit by contributing and supporting him.
“Leeds consolidating themselves in the Premier League in their first year back, it’s been an awesome season for them.”
Bamford has netted 14 goals in 30 top-flight appearances so far and recently made his 100th appearance for the club.
He is the joint-second highest-scoring Englishman in the Premier League this term, behind only Harry Kane.
