McLeish names Leeds player he 'can't wait' to see after Bielsa training ground reveal

Alex McLeish has admitted he “can’t wait to see” new Leeds United signing Junior Firpo in action.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, revealed he is looking forward to comparing the 24-year-old to former Whites star Ezgjan Alioski.

Speaking to Sky Sports (August 10th), Marcelo Bielsa confirmed Firpo had settled in well on the training ground and heralded his “great attributes”.

The Argentine boss also stated the full-back is “technically very adept and physically very gifted”.

Firpo joined Leeds from Barcelona this summer but missed the game against Ajax through injury.

He has filled the void left by Alioski’s exit on a free transfer.

McLeish insisted the North Macedonia international did a “great job” as a makeshift defender.

However, he admitted he was looking forward to seeing how a natural left-back operates under Bielsa.

McLeish told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge: “I can’t wait to see him. Alioski did a great job as a converted winger.

“Many modern-day full-backs evolved from converted left-backs. The likes of Gareth Bale started as a left wing-back. He did it the other way.

“You see the ones who are not quite with Bale’s forward instincts, they are much better coming from a deeper position like the wing-back.

“Whether it’s three at the back and five in midfield or 3-4-3, the wing-backs have become a real fashion in the game.

“Bielsa has brought the Barcelona boy in and it’ll be great to see how Leeds start the season. How advanced he could be on Alioski.”

Firpo played 41 times across two seasons for Barcelona.

He featured in all but two of Barca’s Champions League games last season, including the 1-1 draw with PSG.
