McLeish names two 'definite candidates' for Aston Villa job amid Gerrard snub warning
Aston Villa should target Graham Potter and Roberto Martinez if Steven Gerrard decides to stay at Rangers.
That’s according to former Villains manager Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid fresh developments in the club’s manager hunt.
Aston Villa announced on Sunday that Smith had been sacked with immediate effect.
On Wednesday morning, a Villa source told Football Insider the club are confident of appointing Rangers boss Gerrard, 41, as their new manager by Sunday after talks on Tuesday night.
However, McLeish has warned Gerrard could yet change his mind and named Martinez, 48, and Potter, 46, as two potential backup targets.

“There are some really good coaches on the continent,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“They seem to be the ones who are linked with every job at the moment.
“But, for me, I really like Graham Potter. He’s doing a tremendous job with Brighton.
“Then there is obviously Martinez, he seems to be linked with someone new every day.
“He is a definite candidate. These kinds of guys are the managers I thought Villa would be targetting.
“Obviously there are strong links with Gerrard but if he says no, there are still some great names out there.”
Aston Villa lie 16th in the Premier League after an underwhelming start to the season.
They are next in action against Potter’s Brighton after the international break.
