Alex McLeish has claimed the “remarkable” Marcelo Bielsa is likely to pull off a late-window surprise signing at Leeds United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland, Aston Villa and Rangers manager explained how the Leeds manager will have targets no-one is even talking about.
Leeds are on the verge of their third major summer signing after reaching an agreement to buy the Spanish defender Diego Llorente from Real Sociedad.
The centre-back is set to head to Elland Road for a reported £20million as he follows the earlier window marquee captures of £27m Rodrigo Moreno and £13m Robin Koch.
But McLeish believes the United recruitment drive will not end there.
He told Football Insider: “Bielsa is obviously looking at players we don’t know about in Europe and South America, I would imagine a late surprise, that could prop up the already good team that have come to the Premier League and won the Championship in great style.
“A remarkable bloke, Bielsa, you know that this guy’s something really special. He seems a
really intense coach and it looks like he just lives for the game and that’s his raison d’etre.
“I would back Leeds to stay in the Premier League in their first season.
In addition to the captures of Llorente, Moreno and Koch, Leeds have also converted the 2019-20 loans of Illan Meslier and Helder Costa into permanent deals.
United have taken three points from their opening two Premier League matches, a 4-3 win over Fulham and a 4-3 defeat at champions Liverpool.
