Alex McLeish insisted Celtic star Callum McGregor is a “brilliant player” who would be a big asset to any Premier League side including suitors Leicester City.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the ex-Scotland and Rangers manager knows the Hoops midfielder well from his time in charge of the Tartan Army.
McGregor, 27, was a regular under McLeish after taking his game to a new level during Celtic’s dominance of Scottish football.
This has attracted plenty of suitors, with, as revealed by Football Insider at the end of last month, Leicester preparing to submit a £20million bid for McGregor.
McGregor signed a new five-year contract last November that runs until the summer of 2024 but McLeish is unsurprised by interest from the side that finished fifth in last season’s Premier League.
“He’s a very clever player, quick feet and a very good reader of the game and, as you’ve seen, he can play in different positions,” the manager told Football Insider. “He’s even played wing-back, midfielder, holding midfielder, attacking midfielder.
“He’s a very, very able midfielder that could be a brilliant squad player for any team in
Europe or in England.
“When I say squad player, I don’t mean he won’t start, such is the quality of whole squads in England, their rotation is very frequent and he would be a very big asset to Leicester. I think he would be good enough to go anywhere, though.”
McGregor has been one of Celtic’s star performers during their remarkable dominance of the Scottish game, which has included nine league titles in a row.
The 19-times Scotland international has made 279 appearances for the Hoops, scoring 49 goals and providing 56 assists.
