Alex McLeish has tipped Celtic to cave in and sell Odsonne Edouard if they receive a blockbuster bid from a Premier League club.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former treble-winning Rangers manager insisted he does not see the French striker, 22, as a “troublemaker” behind the scenes.
But McLeish is convinced Edouard’s agent will be working away on securing him a big-money transfer even as Celtic try to secure him to an extended contract.
Football Insider revealed last week that the Hoops are making progress on tying Edouard to a new bumper contract after slapping a prohibitive £40million price tag on him to scare off suitors.
Tellingly, Edouard’s camp want a release clause inserted that will allow him to leave next year.
Asked by Football Insider whether he expects Edouard to leave Celtic after the contract latest, McLeish said: “Certainly he knows there’s a lot of talk about him and he just has to keep delivering the performances. Sadly for Celtic, they’ll probably have to sell him if they get the offer they can’t refuse.
“This summer? I do see a wee bit of dignity in that guy and it doesn’t look like he’s a troublemaker kicking Lenny’s door down every day but I wouldn’t be at all surprised that his agent is working away.
“The smart money in that he would go to a bigger opportunity for more money and that’s the crux of the whole thing.”
“Players nowadays, because the money is so huge in Europe and in the Premier
League, it’s difficult to turn opportunities like that down because you’ve seen it, it’s a short life.
“Not everyone can go into coaching and management, some of them might be going in different directions and walks of life.”
