McLeish ‘wowed’ by Rangers as Tom Lawrence deal confirmed – ‘that’s what you call recruitment’

Alex McLeish is delighted with Rangers’ transfer business after Tom Lawrence arrived at Ibrox.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists he has always been a fan of the former Derby County star.

On Friday (8 July), Rangers announced the signing of Lawrence, 28, from Derby County.

He left the Rams at the end of the 2021-22 season, in which the club was relegated to League One following multiple point deductions.

Joe Aribo was confirmed to have left Rangers on 9 July with Sky Sports reporting the club will receive £6million up front with the deal worth £10million in total.

McLeish is delighted with Rangers’ business even though they have lost a player who was key to their Europa League journey during the 2021-22 season.

“Tom Lawrence, for me, is a great signing,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“I have always liked his style of play, he is a good midfield runner from deep. He is a really good, capable player, that is some bit of business.

“You sell Aribo for £6million and get someone like Tom Lawrence, who is entering the peak of his career.

“Honestly, when I heard that bit of business I thought ‘wow, that’s great’. On a free transfer as well, that’s what you call recruitment.”

Lawrence scored 11 goals in 38 championship appearances during the 2021-22 season.
