Jackie McNamara says that Joe Aribo is “taking over” the midfield at Rangers and that his arrival could lead to the departure of some of Steven Gerrard’s other options.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland international says the new signing from Charlton looks set to head straight into the Light Blues’ line up and that he already appears to be forcing others out the door at Ibrox.
The Gers confirmed on Friday that fellow midfielder Ross McCrorie had joined League One side Portsmouth on a season-long loan, despite having featured 30 times under Gerrard last season.
McNamara says that Aribo’s arrival seems to have been the catalyst for McCrorie’s move to the south coast and that there may well be others in the firing line.
He told Football Insider: “It looks like he’s going to be involved, coming from Charlton and going straight in. Maybe that’s why they’re looking to put other ones out on loan. He’s taking over a little bit.
“When the game starts, there’s big pressure there to jump from (Charlton to Rangers). We’ll see how he handles it.”
With McCrorie having already left, McNamara says that 2016 signing Jordan Rossiter, who is out of contract next summer, could also depart either on loan or in a permanent move after Aribo’s arrival.
“We’ve not really seen much of him because of his injuries,” McNamara said.
“I think they might put him out on loan or try to sell him this summer. He’s had pretty horrendous injuries.”
The 22-year-old has played just 16 times for Rangers during his three years at Ibrox and spent the second half of last season on loan at Bury where he started 15 games in 16 league appearances.
In other Rangers news, Darren Bent made an EXCLUSIVE confession about a potential move to Ibrox.
