Medical complete: Speed demon on verge of English switch after Rangers multiple bids - report
Rangers have missed out on the chance to sign Jamie Walker from Hearts in a cut-price deal, according to a report.
The Daily Record claimed in their live transfer blog on Monday [01:28pm] that Walker, 24, has completed a medical at Wigan over the weekend and is on the verge of signing for the English League One side for a fee of £300,000.
It is understood that Rangers launched multiple bids to sign Walker in the summer but failed to meet Hearts’ asking price of £1million, even though the winger, known for his rapid pace, is out of contract at the end of the season.
Now, the report says that Walker will complete his move to Wigan by the end of Monday, ending what has been a dragged out period of speculation surrounding the future of the former Scotland Under-21 international.
The speed demon has made 19 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals.
Ian Cathro dropped Walker from his first-team at the opening of the season after saying that the winger’s focus had dropped in light of bids from Rangers.
Football Insider verdict
Walker’s form this season has been nowhere near good as last time out and it would perhaps be fair to guess that is down to the speculation that has surrounded him. With the Scottish winger’s contract due to expire at the end of the season, it was probably expected that he would leave the Edinburgh club at some point this month. Rangers would not meet the £1million valuation in the summer and it seems that was a good choice. However it is odd that they did not try to match the £300,000 fee that is said to be taking him to Wigan.
