Medical done: Aston Villa agree terms to sign newly-available proven player

Aston Villa have agreed terms to sign Swansea City striker Borja Baston on a six-month deal after he passed a medical on Friday night, Football Insider understands.

The Spanish hitman became a free agent on deadline day after cancelling his contract at the Liberty Stadium, with his deal in Wales due to expire this summer.

A source at Villa Park has told Football Insider that the 27-year-old has undergone the necessary medical and fitness tests and is set to finalise his move before the 11 PM deadline.

Villa boss Dean Smith has been in the market for a new striker before the transfer window closed after losing Wesley to a long-term injury earlier this season.

The Villans did bring in Mbwana Samatta from Genk for £8.5million earlier this month, but after letting Jonathan Kodjia depart for Qatar this month the manager has moved to provide more cover up front.

Baston joined Swansea from Atletico Madrid in a £15.5million deal in 2016, but he failed to live up to expectations in South Wales and had spells out on loan at Malaga and Alaves.

The 27-year-old started this season in fine style with five goals in five matches, but he has since struggled to hold down a spot in Steve Cooper’s side.

He has gone on to feature a total of 21 times across all competitions for the Swans, managing to net just one more goal since his early-season blitz.
