Medical expert issues Elliott injury verdict after Liverpool latest

Liverpool must remain extra cautious over Harvey Elliott’s injury with “bumps and twists” likely in his recovery process.

That is the view of injury and fitness expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries website and has a background in medicine.

As reported by The Athletic’s James Pearce on Monday (6 December), Elliott is on course to resume team training in January after suffering an ankle fracture-dislocation in September.

The 18-year-old forward will then work on his fitness ahead of a possible return to action.

However, Dinnery has insisted Liverpool will not risk the teenager, with a potential setback likely.

Dinnery told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “In terms of the actual injury itself, a fractured dislocation, we saw a similar setback for Andre Gomes.

“That was an injury everyone touted as season-ending, possibly career-ending. He made his return to play in and around 120 days, around that four-month period.

“The fact that Harvey Elliott could potentially be training and could be back doesn’t come as a massive surprise.

“What I would say a return to training isn’t necessarily a return to play. Given his age, you’re not just making considerations for the short-term, you’re looking at the medium-term.

“There will be no chances, no risks. It’s still very much steady progress, there’s no need for him to be thrown back in.

“Hopefully he comes through the period of recovery without any major setbacks. It rarely is a straight, smooth line to recovery. There are always bumps and twists and turns along the way.”

Elliott featured in all four of Liverpool’s league games before suffering the injury.

He has 13 appearances under his belt for the Reds to date.
