Medical expert: Liverpool will be fuming with Mohamed Salah after new injury twist

Liverpool have a “right to be annoyed” with Mohamed Salah if he did indeed refuse a scan prior to playing through injury with Egypt.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine data analysis.

According to the BBC (6 June), Salah refused Liverpool’s request for a pre-match scan on an undisclosed injury before he played 90 minutes in Egypt’s 1-0 win over Guinea.

The forward missed Thursday’s (9 June) game against Ethiopia after eventually undergoing a scan – with Egypt revealing the presence of a “slight strain”.

Salah, who is under contract until June 2023, was substituted in last month’s FA Cup final victory after suffering a groin injury in the first half.

Dinnery insisted Liverpool are not able to block their players from representing their countries “without consequences”.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Do Liverpool have a right to be annoyed about this? Absolutely.

“At the end of the day, they’re the club paying Salah’s wages. We’re in the close season now, but we’ve seen many examples of players suffering significant setbacks which can roll into the pre-season.

“The caveat is that we’re only reading about this, we don’t know the full details. There was talk of a refusal of an X-ray – but there’s always a possibility of words being mistranslated or misunderstood.

“The quote suggested a refusal, but we haven’t heard from the player about whether that was the case.

“But the club can’t block him from playing. It certainly wouldn’t be without consequences.

We saw that during some of the international games in 2021 with the fears surrounding Covid.”
