Medical today: Southampton agree deal to sign David Brooks – sources

Bournemouth winger David Brooks is undergoing a medical at Southampton on Tuesday (30 January) ahead of a loan move, sources have told Football Insider.

The 26-year-old is poised to join the Saints as they target promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Southampton have already signed one Bournemouth player on loan this month, with midfielder Joe Rothwell joining Russell Martin’s side until the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

Brooks has featured sparingly for the Cherries under Andoni Iraola this season and has been allowed to leave the club for regular first-team football elsewhere.

The Wales international has made 18 appearances across all competitions this term, notching three goals and three assists.

However, just six of those outings have come as part of the Bournemouth starting lineup.

Brooks was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma in October 2021 and made his return to football in March 2023 after a significant layoff for treatment.

The winger, who is under contract at the Vitality Stadium until June 2026, has made 114 appearances in total for Bournemouth since joining from Sheffield United in 2018.

He has notched 20 goals and 15 assists in those outings.

Brooks, who worked under Southampton director of football Jason Wilcox during his development at Man City, went public with his desire for first-team football earlier this month.

The Saints sit third in the Championship and are just one point adrift of the automatic promotion places.

Brooks, who is capped 28 times by Wales, could make his debut away at Rotherham on Saturday (3 February).
