Medical underway: Birmingham beat West Ham to signing after 7-figure fee agreed - Sources

Birmingham City are close to signing Neil Etheridge from Cardiff City after he began a medical this afternoon, Football Insider can reveal.

The Championship outfit have beaten off interest from a string of top clubs to agree the terms of a £1.5million deal for the goalkeeper, 30, with the Welsh club.

A Birmingham source has told Football Insider that Etheridge is set to join on a permanent deal and is set to sign a contract imminently.

It comes after the keeper was the subject of strong interest from West Ham and Middlesbrough earlier this window.

The Premier League club had a £7million bid for Etheridge knocked back by Cardiff in January as they searched for keeper reinforcements.

They registered their interest again this summer but were not able to offer him a regular starting role.

Etheridge was Cardiff’s player of the year in 2019 but has been on the fringes under manager Neil Harris.

He sustained a hamstring injury at the turn of the year amid speculation over West Ham’s interest and started only 16 Championship matches last season.

But Etheridge has extensive experience in the Championship as well as the Premier League and League One after significant spells at Walsall and Bristol Rovers.

The Philippines international is now set to reignite his career by linking with Aitor Karanka at St Andrew’s.

The recently-appointed manager has overhauled a squad that has consistently finished in the second half of the Championship in recent years.

In other Birmingham City news, the club’s bid to sign Newcastle United ace has received a huge new update.
