Merson delivers verdict on Sanchez-Arsenal saga, claims this is embarrassing

By Will Butcher

Paul Merson is not surprised that Alexis Sanchez wants to leave Arsenal after being left on the bench against Liverpool on Saturday evening.

The Daily Mail claims the former Barcelona attacker wants to leave the Emirates Stadium in the summer, after being dropped to the bench against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Speaking to Alan Brazil’s talkSPORT breakfast show on Monday morning, Merson revealed that he understands Sanchez’s desire to leave and described the situation as “embarrassing”.

“Whatever way you weigh it up, it’s absolutely wrong,” Merson said, as quoted on Alan Brazil’s Twitter account. “He gives you everything; he’s their best player by a million miles.

“This was the biggest game they’ve had because they’ve got to get in the top four and he [Arsene Wenger] puts him on the bench. I’m not surprised he wants to leave, it’s embarrassing.”

Sanchez, 28, came on at half-time during the 3-1 loss to Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, as goals from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum proved too much for the Gunners.

Chile international Sanchez came off the bench to provide an assist for the Gunners only goal, as he slid Welbeck through on goal before the England star chipped the on-rushing Simon Mignolet.

The loss to Liverpool leaves Arsenal outside of the Premier League’s top four, with the Merseyside giants two points above the Gunners in fourth place.

This season, Sanchez has had a hand in a huge 37 goals for the north London giants during his 35 league and cup appearances throughout the 2016-17 campaign.

Scoring 20 times against the likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea and West Ham, the former Barcelona star has also conjured up 17 assists this season.
