Michael Carrick: Big update on Man United ‘offer’
Michael Carrick is unlikely to be among the leading candidates to take over from Erik ten Hag at Man United, according to the club’s former chief scout.
Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at United during their most successful period and remains very well-connected at the club, exclusively told Football Insider that they are considering more experienced options to replace the sacked Dutchman.
Ten Hag was dismissed as United boss on 28 October following a 2-1 defeat to West Ham, with an official statement confirming his departure.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as the interim head coach in the meantime, while the club continue the process of hiring a permanent replacement.
Former Everton chief Keith Wyness told Football Insider on 12 October that Carrick would be among the contenders after proving himself in the Championship.
However, the Middlesbrough boss is no longer considered to be among the top targets for the position, with alternative options already being explored.
Brown has explained that while Carrick is highly thought of at Old Trafford and ticks plenty of boxes, the club would prefer to hire an experienced top-level boss and an offer is not expected at this stage.
Man United make Michael Carrick decision after Ten Hag sack
Carrick’s Boro side currently sit ninth in the Championship table after taking five wins, three draws and four defeats from their opening 12 games of the season.
The manager’s connections to United played a big part in his consideration for the role, but Brown, who also spent a period as Sir Alex Ferguson’s number two, has insisted that those connections will not be enough to hand him the job.
“From what I’ve heard, I don’t see Carrick as the man for them,” he told Football Insider.
“I don’t see him as the man to take United forward.
“The people who need to know the club and the way it’s always worked are the people right at the top, and I would argue they don’t know it well and it doesn’t look like they’ve tried to.
“I’ve heard that’s not part of their thinking at the moment.
“So Carrick’s connections to the club won’t make a difference to whether they offer him the job.
“He’s highly regarded at the United and I’ve never heard a bad word about him, but he’s not one of their top targets.

“He ticks a lot of boxes for the club and I’m sure he was considered at some stage.
“But the way things are at the moment, the board want an experienced leader. They want to get the best manager they can for the job.”
