Michael Carrick in ‘very strong position’ to be next Man United manager
Michael Carrick is being backed to become Man United manager until the end of the season.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes the former Man United player would bring a togetherness back to Old Trafford.
Darren Fletcher will lead Man United on a short-term basis after the club sacked Ruben Amorim following a draw at Leeds.
Carrick is on Man United’s shortlist to become their next manager, with the 44-year-old having been out of work since being sacked by Middlesborough in June 2025.
Michael Carrick would get ‘backing from the fans’
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – states that no contender appeals to him on Man United’s shortlist.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes the club do not need a manager that will experiment with tactics and formations.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Nobody really gets it right for me. The hope that I would think, if I was sitting as the Chief Executive at Man United now. I wouldn’t have made some of the decisions that have been made, that’s for sure, but, I’d be looking to try and get the club to close ranks and really go inwards and get that strength.
“And I’d be appointing somebody like, yes, we’re going to have Darren Fletcher short-term, but I’d be appointing somebody like Michael Carrick as a longer interim manager to the end of the season and hope that he performs, and that you start to get the Man United group fighting against the world. I think that’s what you’ve got to try and create that sort of atmosphere, and that’s where I think they could be successful.
“I think given the backing that Carrick would get from the fans and internally, I think he would have a very strong position to operate from, I think that’s the sort of way I’d be going to try and create that atmosphere of us against the world. Trying to experiment with football formations and different theories of football ain’t what Man United are about.
“They’ve got to be a hard team, and they’ve got to get that spirit back that was their winning formula before. So that’s the way I’d be looking to go, but there’s no names right now that would appeal to me, but that’s the way that I’d be looking to take it forward if I was there as of today.”

Man Untied to make Harry Amass decision
Man United left-back Harry Amass could return to Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the season, after spending the first half of the campaign at Hillsborough.
Stoke City have also shown interest in taking Amass on loan, with the 18-year-old a star performer in a struggling Sheffield Wednesday team.
Amass has started 21 of Sheffield Wednesday’s 25 Championship games this season, scoring one goal and registering one assist.
