Michael Carrick is favourite to replace Championship manager, Russell Martin is in the running

Michael Carrick is the favourite to replace Ryan Mason as West Brom manager after they suffered another defeat at the hands of Hull City last time out.

West Brom took a gamble when they appointed ex-Tottenham midfielder Mason as their new manager in June, and it has not paid off so far.

His rocky start to life as Baggies boss has seen them lose 10 of their first 22 games of this season, and they currently sit 16th in the Championship as a result.

Football Insider recently revealed that West Brom will rethink Mason’s position if they are dragged into a relegation battle soon.

They are nine points off the drop right now, but calls for him to be sacked have grown stronger after they were beaten 1-0 by Hull City on Saturday.

Carrick leads the way as favourite to be next West Brom boss

Man United hero Carrick has been out of a job since he was sacked by Middlesbrough in June, after they finished 10th in the Championship despite being in the race for a top-six finish.

He led Boro to a fourth-placed finish in his first season in charge after taking over while they were in a relegation battle, but they were beaten by Coventry City in the play-off semi-finals.

They came eighth in the Championship in his second campaign at the helm before falling to 10th last season, but despite that downfall, Carrick has been mooted to take over at Man United on an interim basis recently amid uncertainty around Ruben Amorim’s job.

The former England midfielder is undoubtedly one of the best available options in the Championship manager market, and so it comes as little surprise to see him installed as the current favourite to replace Mason at The Hawthorns, at odds of 3/1.

Former Baggies manager Carlos Corberan is next up at 9/2, while Russell Martin and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are also in the running at 6/1 respectively.

Which other Championship managers are under pressure right now?

Numerous managers have lost their jobs in the second tier this season, but no boss has been sacked since Swansea City’s Alan Sheehan was relieved of his duties on 11 November.

Those clubs that are considering a change of manager are likely to act soon, ahead of the January window and second half of the campaign, and Mason is not the current favourite to lose his job next in the Championship despite West Brom’s struggles.

His West Midlands rival Chris Davies is actually the most likely to be sacked next in the Championship, according to the bookies, at 6/4 to Mason’s 3/1.

Oxford United are in the relegation zone as it stands, with their manager Gary Rowett next up at 9/2 as a result, while troubled Sheffield Wednesday may look to relieve Henrik Pedersen of his duties soon, as he comes in at 6/1.
