Michael Edwards rejected an offer to join Man United before returning to Liverpool, sources have told Football Insider.
Edwards, 44, is set to begin his role as the Reds’ new CEO of football on 1 June and will oversee football operations for owners Fenway Sports Group.
However, well-placed sources have told Football Insider that Edwards turned down a senior role in the Red Devils’ backroom as well as an offer from Chelsea.
Edwards reportedly rejected an offer from Liverpool in January to return as their sporting director but has since accepted a more senior role.

He is set to have a major influence at Anfield as they prepare for their post-Jurgen Klopp era.
Meanwhile, Man United are in the midst of a backroom overhaul following the arrival of new shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who will oversee football operations at Old Trafford.
While Edwards rejected them, they remain active in pursuing other targets, with Football Insider revealing (10 March) that Sir Alex Ferguson is pushing strongly to appoint Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman as their new head of recruitment.
They have also agreed a deal with Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth to join as their new transfer chief, with Football Insider revealing (21 February) that the clubs are likely to reach a financial compromise to end his gardening leave early.
