Mills blasts ‘dramatically wrong’ Romero and Lo Celso after Sky’s ‘bizarre’ Tottenham reveal

Danny Mills has backed Tottenham as they plan to fine Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso for joining up with Argentina during the international break.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender revealed he found the whole situation “very, very bizarre”.

Sky Sports reported on September 7 the duo will be hit with “hefty” fines for going against the club wishes and travelling to South America.

Lo Celso and Romero started Argentina’s game against Brazil that was abandoned because they had not quarantined after entering the country, as per Brazilian law.

They have now travelled to green-list Croatia, along with Aston Villa’s Emi Buendia and Emi Martinez, to train for 10 days before returning to the UK.

“They’ve gone against their club wishes and they’ve also broken international guidances and laws, whatever you want to call it,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Because of that, they’re going to be punished and they’re not going to be able to play. Going against your club’s wishes is one thing, breaking covid regulations meaning you can’t now play for your club – why wouldn’t you be fined?

“Tottenham employ them but they’re not able to play for them. Why would Tottenham not say ‘Hang on a minute, while you can’t play for us, we’re having that money back’.

“It was their choice to go. This is not an injury, it’s something that was their choice to do and they’ve made the decision. They got it dramatically wrong. How they got it wrong I do not know.

“I do not know how they were not given an exemption for special circumstances. It’s bizarre, very, very bizarre.”
