Mills cites Michael Owen as he issues 'massive' Leeds teenager verdict

Danny Mills has warned Leeds United not to throw Archie Gray into the first team before he is ready.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender insisted it is a “massive” step up from Under-23s to Leeds’ first-team.

The 15-year-old travelled with the senior side for their 2-1 defeat to Tottenham last weekend but did not make it onto the bench.

The Athletic‘s Phil Hay reported (November 22) his performances in first-team training had set “tongues wagging” at Thorp Arch.

“They have just go to be careful that they don’t throw him in too soon,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’s still in the development stage of growing and learning. He’s an Under-16.

“When you look at the likes of the very, very best, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney. When Rooney broke through he was a physical specimen of a man.

“The experience will do him good. Being in and around it, seeing what it is like. He’s just got to make sure he doesn’t get carried away with himself.

“Leeds should not be tempted to throw him in too quickly. That, at points, can do more harm than good.

“He’s played a limited amount of Under-23s football and been in the Papa John’s Trophy but it’s massively off the first-team levels.”

Gray has played three times for Leeds Under-23s in Premier League 2 this term.

He also featured, and registered an assist, in the 4-1 defeat to Tranmere Rovers in the Papa John’s Trophy in September.

In other news, Leeds United have been left ‘hanging by a thread’ after a new injury update.
