Danny Mills has warned Leeds United that “they cannot afford to take their foot off the gas” when they welcome Fulham to Elland Road on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former England international claimed that it would “exceptional” and a huge box ticked if Marcelo Bielsa’s side can win and keep a clean sheet against the Cottagers.
A much-changed Whites team were knocked out of the EFL Cup last night – Hull City eventual 9-8 winners on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Bielsa is expected to name a very similar eleven to the side that lost 4-3 at Anfield last weekend against Fulham.
Liam Cooper is likely to return from injury to replace Pascal Struijk while Patrick Bamford is set to lead the attack.
When asked by Football Insider for his pre-match thoughts, Mills said: “This is a game that Leeds need to take maximum points from.
“It was a great performance against Liverpool but they did not get the point that they probably deserved so now they have to back that up. The levels have to be the same.
“Leeds have to get three points on the board early on because if you go five, six games before a win the pressure starts to mount.
“They have gone away from home and scored goals – that is the first box ticked for this season. Now they need a home win, an away win, a clean sheet – these are the tick boxes they need to get. A clean sheet, home win against what you assume to be one of Leeds’ rivals for relegation, that would be exceptional.
“They have to build on that performance. Fulham will be hurting after their loss to Arsenal. Leeds cannot underestimate them and take their foot off the gas. They cannot afford to do that.”
