Mills: Everton fans will be fuming with Benitez after Newcastle source reveal
Rafael Benitez will not risk the backlash from the Everton fans by quitting the club to join Newcastle United, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender claimed Newcastle are a bigger project than Everton and have no chance of getting into Europe this season.
A Newcastle source told Football Insider yesterday (October 7) one of the new Suadi-backed regime’s top priorities is to sound out Benitez about a sensational return as they target a top-tier appointment.
The Spaniard spent over three years in charge of the Magpies and remains a popular figure among the fan base.
However, he returned to the Premier League with Everton this summer.
Asked whether he thought Benitez would make the move back to the northeast, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I don’t think he would.

“The fact he took that job, knowing everything that went around. It’s a bigger project up at Newcastle, he’s not going to get them into Europe.
“Plus, we know his family links on the Wirral, that’s where he’s happy and part of why he went to Everton.
“If he was to jump ship now, living on the Wirral, having upset Everton and Liverpool fans in the first place, certainly wouldn’t be a wise decision. I wouldn’t be contemplating it.”
Despite the widespread backlash after his appointment, Benitez has enjoyed a solid start to life at Goodison Park.
The Toffees have lost just one of their opening seven Premier League games and sit in fifth.
