Mills: This is real reason Everton fans should be worried about Benitez after Sky update today
Danny Mills has claimed Everton fans should be more worried about Rafa Benitez’s style of play than his links to Liverpool.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender claimed the club have built a side with the ability to play a possession-based style of football.
Sky Sports reported today Benitez is still a frontrunner for the job but up to seven other candidates are still being considered.
The 61-year-old has been an unpopular choice amongst the fanbase after spending six years in charge of their bitter Merseyside rivals Liverpool.
“I’m a little bit surprised,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“It’s not so much the Liverpool links. If you’re a good manager it doesn’t matter. If you do a good job it’s forgotten about almost immediately. If you don’t, it will hang over you.

“What I am a little bit surprised about is that he’s not necessarily the progressive manager that we expected the next person to take over to be.
“The style of football is a little bit bland under Rafa Benitez. It’s not exciting football, I know exciting football isn’t the be-all and end-all.
“But when you look at the players Everton have and what they’ve tried to do over the last couple of seasons, it would lead to a more possession-based football.
“That’s not how Rafa plays unless he’s changed his philosophy and his mindset. That would be a bigger concern for me for Everton fans rather than the fact he used to manage Liverpool.”
