Poveda ‘surplus to requirements’ at Leeds after confirmed news – Mills

Ian Poveda is “surplus to requirements” at Leeds United and has no long-term future at Elland Road, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender delivered his verdict after Poveda completed a season-long loan to Blackburn Rovers.

Leeds confirmed on 23 August that the 21-year-old would spend the rest of the campaign at Ewood Park.

There is no option for the deal to be made permanent.

Football Insider first revealed on 17 August that the winger was set for a late-window exit and a permanent move away was possible.

It is understood Poveda has been involved in a behind the scenes fallout and had been dropped down to the Under-23s squad.

Poveda featured 14 times from the bench in the Premier League last season.

Asked whether he still has a future with the club, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “No is the answer.

“Once you get sent out on loan it’s very difficult to come back and have a real impact.

“The reason you are being sent out on loan is because you are surplus to requirements.

“That sticks in your mind, even if you go out and have a fantastic season, it’s always in your mind that ‘This manager did not want me last season’.

“There’s always a bit of a hangover from that. It’s quite hard to shake off sometimes.”

Poveda moved to the Yorkshire giants from Manchester City in January 2020.

He has one assist in 20 games across all competitions for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

In other news, a bold Leeds United player prediction has been dropped as he is spotted jetting out of England.
