Mills suggests Everton will cause significant divide with fans after Martinez update
There would be a “split within the Everton fans” if Roberto Martinez was appointed as the club’s new manager, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England full-back accused the club of “toying with the fans emotions”.
Everton are in the market for a new manager as Rafa Benitez’s 199-day reign came to an end on Sunday (16 January) following the 2-0 defeat to bottom side Norwich City the previous day.
The Athletic reported yesterday (17 January) the Blues have already offered the job to former manager Roberto Martinez who is currently in charge of the Belgium national team.
The 48-year-old spent almost three years in charge of the Merseyside club before being sacked in May 2016 after fan protests.
“It hasn’t quite happened with Belgium,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“He always comes close but he’s got some fantastic players in that squad and for whatever reason, it hasn’t quite happened. They have come up against some good teams in that time.
“He’ll want to play the right style of football that we all want to see in this day and age.
“He was sacked before at Everton. It wouldn’t be the worst appointment in the world.
“I’m not sure how the fans would take it given he’s been there already and there were issues before. Has he changed enough, has he developed enough? I’m not sure.
“You are toying with fans emotions a little bit by bringing someone back who wasn’t successful.

“If you brought back David Moyes they would bite your hand off because he was incredibly successful.
“If you bring back Roberto Martinez I think there would be a bit of a split within the Everton fans.”
In other news, there has been a significant update on Everton potentially appointing Wayne Rooney.
