Exclusive: Danny Mills tips Tottenham to sign forward in January
Danny Mills has tipped Tottenham to sign an attacking player in January who can deputise for Harry Kane.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England international explained why he regards a forward as a more likely recruit than a defender.
Spurs have two senior centre-backs out of contract next summer – Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld – and there are major doubts over the futures of Danny Rose and Serge Aurier.
But Mills believes it will be on the other side of the pitch where the Londoners are most likely to bring in fresh blood.
“You’ve got Vertonghen and Alderweireld, best partnership in the Premier League, for the last three to four seasons, absolutely outstanding,” Mills told Football Insider.
“Spurs have a couple of good left-backs, good midfield players, so the only January signing may be a back-up for Kane.
“That is likely to be the only one, up front, just to give Kane a rest from time to time, that’s the only position.”
There is no senior orthodox striker back-up to main man Kane in Jose Mourinho’s squad.
Lucas Moura, who scored in yesterday’s 2-1 win at Wolves, led the line when Kane was rested for last Wednesday’s 3-1 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, but, like Son Heung-Min, the Brazilian is not at his best with his back to goal.
Troy Parrott is making a name for himself as a striker after being handed his first international cap by the Republic of Ireland aged 17, but he has only made two senior Spurs appearances to date.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that Jose Mourinho has shut the door on Spurs player exit as talks advance on new three-year deal.
