Mills swipes at 'furious' Mings after behind-the-scenes Aston Villa reveal

Tyrone Mings can have no complaints after he was axed from the Aston Villa starting XI, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender insisted Mings has no divine right to be in the Villa starting XI.

The Villa captain was dropped to the bench for their 4-1 defeat to West Ham but had to come on when Ezri Konsa was shown a red card.

The Athletic reported (November 3) Mings was “furious” at the decision when he was informed the day before the game.

Dean Smith justified the decision by insisting he has “not been at the top of his game recently”.

“He deserved to be dropped because the manager decided to drop him,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“This is sport at the very, very top level. If you’re not doing it, you’re out. It’s as simple as that. There’s no if, buts and maybes. You have to perform week in, week out or you’re going to get dropped, you’re not going play.

“You don’t have a divine right just because you’ve been in a few England squads. You’ve got to keep doing it on a regular basis.

“It won’t upset the squad if he’s not playing well. If the players look it and think ‘That’s justified’ they will have no issues, whatsoever. Absolutely none.

“If they feel it’s unjust, then possibly. If a player’s not training well or causing issues but he performs on a Saturday, you forgive him and you get away with all sorts.

“If the player’s not doing it on the pitch, it doesn’t matter who you are.”
