Mills tips Delph for first start of season after early Everton team news

Danny Mills has tipped Fabian Delph to earn his first Everton start of the season against Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender suggested Delph’s “experience and energy” will be vital for Everton this Sunday.

The midfielder made his first appearance against Wolves on Monday night since a seven-minute cameo against his former side Leeds in August.

He replaced Jean-Phillipe Gbamin at half-time as the Blues fell to a 2-1 defeat at Molineux.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo in his pre-Spurs press conference, Rafa Benitez revealed he got through the loss unscathed and was available this weekend.

The Everton boss also confirmed Abdoulaye Doucoure, Andre Gomes, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Yerry Mina will miss the game against Tottenham.

Asked whether he expects Delph to start against Tottenham, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “He may well do.

“He came on for Gbamin who hasn’t played an awful lot of football, who was maybe rusty and found it difficult at times which is understandable.

“If Fabian Delph is fit then yes.

“He’s got experience, he’s got energy. He’s got a great opportunity in that midfield, with Doucoure obviously still out, to be in there from the start.”

Delph managed just two Premier League starts last season as he struggled with various injuries.

The ex-England star has featured in 36 games across all competitions since signing for the Blues in the summer of 2019.

The 31-year-old is under contract at Goodison Park until the end of the season.
