Mills verdict on Man United completing midfield signing after McTominay news

Danny Mills does not expect Man United to “panic” and sign a new midfielder despite Scott McTominay’s injury.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England full-back insisted Man United have the squad depth to cope without McTominay.

The club confirmed yesterday (26 August) that the Scotland international has had surgery on his groin.

The Athletic report he will now miss a month of action, including the upcoming Scotland games.

He started United’s opening game of the season against Leeds and was introduced from the bench last weekend against Southampton.

“It’s disappointing for him,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He obviously played for Scotland in the Euros and it now looks like he was getting regular football in the first team. It’s disappointing for him.

“They’ll look at their midfield and maybe Pogba will have to slot a little bit deeper. I think you would say, with Varane coming in as well, they’ve probably got enough to cope with that.

“You’re always going to get one or two injuries. I don’t see Manchester United panicking and going ‘We need a centre-midfielder now’.

“He’s a first-team player but he’s not first on the teamsheet.

“There’s Donny van de Beek, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic who are still hanging around. All these players are still there. Maybe we might see Phil Jones.”

McTominay featured in 32 Premier League games last season, including 24 starts.

The 24-year-old has now played 135 times for the Old Trafford giants across all competitions.

In other news, there has been a huge update on West Ham’s bid to sign Jesse Lingard from Man United after talks.
