Mochi presents Aston Villa with ‘signing plan’ for next five years – Wyness

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed his old side will be “under pressure” to sign “big players” if they qualify for the Champions League.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs –insisted the Midlands giants have done enough to keep hold of current stars like Ollie Watkins and Douglas Luiz.

Aston Villa lead Tottenham in the race for a fourth-place Premier League finish, which ensures qualification to the Champions League league phase next term.

Unai Emery’s side are seven points ahead of Spurs with three games left to play, while Ange Postecoglou’s side have four games left this term.

Aston Villa ‘under pressure’ to spend big if Champions League football is secured, says Wyness

Wyness claimed the “pressure” will be on to ensure Villa’s squad is at the right level to play Champions League football.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Emery is the man manager who can keep players at Aston Villa.

“Douglas Luiz has bought into the project. He’s playing better, along with the whole squad.

“They can strengthen. I’m sure with Monchi’s skills, they’ve already got a blueprint going forward.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s presented the blueprint for the next four or five years to the owners, persuading them to spend big.

“They’ve now got enough to keep Luiz, Ollie Watkins and other stars – as well as add more.

“If they’re in the Champions League, they will be under pressure to go out and spend on big players to make sure the squad is at the right level.”
