Moffat is ‘out of his depth’ and should be ‘nowhere near’ Celtic XI – McAvennie

Frank McAvennie claims Owen Moffat is not yet ready to be playing for the Celtic first team.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the youngster is out of his depth.

Moffat, 19, made his first Premiership appearances for Celtic over the festive period.

He came on as a substitute against Ross County on 15 December before starting against St Mirren on 22 December.

The attacker also played seven minutes against Hibernian in the Premier Sports Cup final against Hibs on 19 December.

McAvennie claims Moffat does have potential but insists he should not have been playing in the “vital” game against St Mirren.

“Postecoglou likes giving chances to players,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s given Moffat a few games but he’s out of his depth. He’s not ready for that.

“But he has still played in a couple of games. I get why he’s doing it but he started in a vital game against St Mirren and we drew.

“I’m not saying it’s his fault we didn’t win but we can’t be taking big risks if we are going to win this title.

“That’s just my opinion, I’m sure the guy has potential but we need to be putting stronger teams out if we want to challenge Rangers.”

Moffat has been at Celtic since he was seven years old and signed his first professional deal in 2019.

The Hoops are next in action on 17 January against Hibernian.
