Mohamed Salah is highly unlikely to make a move to a European club ahead of his imminent exit from Liverpool as clubs are now having second thoughts.

The 33-year-old has struggled with a difficult season so far at Anfield and no longer looks like the player he was as part of Arne Slot’s title-winning side last season.

Concerns about his recent performances as well as his age mean clubs are not willing to meet his lofty wage demands and have backed away from a deal.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich will not step up their interest.

Despite recognition of Salah’s talent and superstar status, they are prepared to snub the chance to sign him, with a move to Saudi Arabia growing closer ahead of his Liverpool exit.

European clubs to pull out of Mohamed Salah deal

Football Insider revealed on 29 March that clubs including Real Madrid could sign Salah as they would be able to afford his wage demands, although there is uncertainty.

Bayern Munich and PSG are the others believed to be capable of matching his earnings, but they are now unlikely to do so, with a move elsewhere more likely.

Salah’s age is the major concern, while there are also doubts about whether he would be willing to stay in Europe given the interest from Saudi Arabia.

“I think the Saudi move is far more likely for Salah,” Brown told Football Insider.

“We’re talking about a 33-year-old who has had a notable downturn in his performances this season, and I don’t know many top clubs who will sign a player like that on massive wages.

“Liverpool gave him a big new contract last year and I don’t expect he’ll be looking to budge on that.

“Whether it’s Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern Munich, whoever, I expect they’ll be backing away.

“Maybe if he was showing similar form to what he showed last season they might be tempted to take the gamble, but that’s not the case.

“It’s very unlikely that he’ll stay in Europe to be honest, I think the Saudi league will be the one.”

Saudi Pro League clubs lead race for Mohamed Salah

Despite interest from some top European clubs, a move to the Middle East remains the most likely move for Salah, with clubs now set to step up their interest.

Football Insider revealed on 27 March that Saudi clubs are preparing moves for Salah and hope to finally lure him to the Pro League after years of trying.

The 33-year-old has been the top target for Middle Eastern clubs for years now, as a £150million bid for his signature was rebuffed by the Reds in 2023.

Clubs are prepared to make Salah the face of the league and offer a mega-money deal which could see him rival Cristiano Ronaldo’s superstar status.

European clubs are likely to miss out as a result, while they are expected to drop their interest in what will come as a boost to the Saudi clubs’ chances.
